A deck does all to increase the curb appeal of your house and extends your living area. It gives you ample of space to enjoy your evenings and spot of family gatherings. Like any other space of your house, deck requires cleaning and maintenance. By staining the wooden deck in your favorite deck stain colors, you will simply add years to its life.
Cleaning and staining ensures that your deck is habitable and safe. Deck staining project involve many small and big precautions. If you pay attention to these, it will get you better and long lasting exterior wood stain.
DO WAIT FOR FAVORABLE TEMPERATURES
If you stain in cold temperatures, it will take more time to dry up. It may even cause the surface to be sticky forever which never cures until you start afresh after removing the stain. So, hot weather is optimal for staining but avoid both the extreme temperatures. You should look for the weather forecast to plan the staining day. Best temperature ranges between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
DO A SAMPLE TRIAL
The way it is good to test sample of paint before painting whole wall, it is advised to test the stain over a left piece of wood after constructing the deck. If it is not available then you can either purchase a similar lumber from market or do it on a hidden piece of your deck. Leave it for few hours to conclude whether it is the best for your deck or not.
DO APPLY STAIN LIBERALLY
If you are acting miser in coating stain on your deck it won’t give you the best results. Why? A thin layer of stain will not penetrate rather it will set on the top most layer which will be a superficial and non-durable application.
DON’T CARRY OUT THE PROJECT IN DIRECT SUN
It is again related with the penetration of stain into the wood. If the deck staining project is carried out in direct sun, the heat of the sun will dry up the layer coated even before you finish the application. Lap marks and early damages are the most common effects of staining deck in heat. Application of stains on hot surfaces often causes headaches, dizziness and vomiting because of heating up of volatile compounds present in the wood stain.
DON’T STAIN WHEN DECK IS DUMP, WET OR FROSTED
There are products that are specifically designed for wet surfaces but they also perform better if they are applied to the surfaces that are dry for last 24-48 hours.
